Ontario Invests in HYGN Energy to Advance Hydrogen Energy Storage Solutions for Industrial Power and Off-Grid EV Charging

HYGN Energy will advance its Ontario-designed Hydrogen Battery in partnership with Rainbow Concrete Industries Limited and Debwewin-HYGN Technologies, with support from the Government of Ontario through OVIN.

Newmarket, Ontario — [August 26, 2026] — HYGN Energy Inc., an Ontario-based clean technology company developing hydrogen energy solutions for industrial and transportation applications, is pleased to announce its participation in a new Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) R&D Partnership Fund project focused on developing hydrogen energy storage for industrial power and off-grid electric vehicle fast charging. In partnership with Rainbow Concrete Industries Limited and Debwewin-HYGN Technologies, HYGN Energy will develop and demonstrate the HYGN Hydrogen Battery, an energy-storage system designed to provide dispatchable electricity for industrial equipment and off-grid electric vehicle fast charging.

The project represents a total investment of over $2 million, including up to $696,000 from the Province of Ontario through OVIN and over $1.2 million in industry contributions from HYGN Energy and its project partners.

Through this OVIN-supported project, HYGN Energy will validate the HYGN Hydrogen Battery at an active Rainbow Concrete industrial site, using the system to power a mobile concrete plant and an off-grid EV fast-charging station under real-world operating conditions.

Unlike a conventional electrochemical battery, the HYGN Hydrogen Battery stores electrical energy by producing hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. The stored energy is converted back into electricity through a proprietary combustion-based power-generation system. The system does not use a fuel cell and is not dependent on deliveries of pure compressed hydrogen. Hydrogen and oxygen are produced as needed from electricity and water, reducing reliance on specialized hydrogen-fueling infrastructure and simplifying deployment at industrial, remote, and grid-constrained locations.

The Hydrogen Battery is designed to accept electricity from a range of sources, including off-peak grid electricity, solar, wind, geothermal and other renewable or distributed generation systems. The system can then dispatch energy when electricity is unavailable, expensive, or insufficient to meet the site’s power requirements.

Rainbow Concrete will serve as the industrial host and support the systems integration into operating equipment and site infrastructure. Debwewin-HYGN Technologies will support Indigenous engagement, project deployment and the development of future opportunities involving Indigenous, northern and remote communities.

The partners will evaluate the system’s power output, energy-storage performance, response to changing industrial loads, EV fast-charging capability, and potential to support peak-demand reduction. The project is also expected to generate operating data that will support commercialization and future deployment of modular hydrogen storage energy systems in Ontario and other markets. Many industrial and remote sites cannot add large electrical loads without costly and time-consuming grid upgrades.

HYGN Energy is advancing an Ontario-made hydrogen energy storage solution that can support industrial operations, transportation infrastructure, and communities with limited access to dependable electrical capacity. The project will also contribute to Ontario’s clean technology manufacturing capacity and support the development of resilient power solutions for industrial and off-grid applications.
